What can you sell as an activity in Moder?
...or what does "activity" even mean in Moder? Well, in Moder, we define an activity as an hour-based product. Using activities, you can sell a variety of your products, such as:
- Meeting rooms
- Sauna facilities
- Hot tubs and jacuzzis
- All kinds of rental equipment and activities, like fat bikes, husky and reindeer safaris, guided experiences, frisbee golf, rowing boats, kayaks, and SUP boards
- Table reservations
- Breakfasts
- Spa treatments
- Transportation
- And much more! ?
The list above is just a small example of what you can sell as an activity. In this course, we’ll dive deeper into how you can utilize hour-based products in Moder, how to build them, and all the ways this feature can be applied.
Activity - an hour-based product
As mentioned in the previous section, an activity in Moder is primarily an hour-based product, making it highly suitable for selling a wide range of products.
However, there is one limitation: activities in Moder cannot currently be sold as overnight bookings. This means the activity must take place within a single calendar day when you select "Activity" as the product type in Moder.
That said, you can still create products like a sauna or meeting room as an overnight activity if desired - more on that later!
Unit based and private activity
Hour-based products can be sold in two ways: for example, you can sell multiple spots for a general sauna session (units) or alternatively, sell one sauna session at a time for private use. These are referred to as unit bookings and private bookings.
Next, we’ll show you how to create a unit booking product or a private booking product in your Moder webshop.
Creating an activity product
Move to Products tab in your Moder. Here's where you can create and modify all your items and products.
When you want to create more products, simply click the "Add product" button on the right-hand side.
Basic information
If you’ve already completed the course on creating accommodation products, a word of caution: here comes some repetition! If building accommodation products is second nature to you, feel free to skip this section and jump straight to the next topic.
Behind the Edit and Add product buttons, you’ll first see the product’s basic details. Most of these details will be visible to your customers in the webshop.
Name and translation
The very first step is to name your activity product. You can also immediately add a translation for your desired webshop language under the name - your selected webshop languages have already been set up in the Login and settings course.
If you leave the translation field empty, the name you’ve just set will appear the same across all language versions of your webshop. If you want your product to have a different name in another language, add a translation for the product name.
Type
Next, select Activity as the product type from the dropdown menu. This information will also be visible to your customers in the webshop.
All the other types listed are meant for over-night products, except for Activity - this is the hour-based product we’ll select from the list now.
Moder Tip! The type list also includes Sauna, Party venue, and Conference room, which are intended for overnight bookings. If you wish, you can create these types of products similarly to accommodation products and manage them just like accommodations. More on this later in the course!
Virtual room, is active and booking request
Next, decide whether the product is a virtual product, active = is published, or operates on a booking request basis.
Virtual room
A virtual product or room in Moder essentially means a travel package. It’s built on top of an existing product and is covered in more detail in the course dedicated to virtual products.
Active = Is published
Active (can be booked) means the product is available for booking in your webshop. You can also create products that are not active - for instance, for internal use only.
Note! For an activity to appear in your webshop, it must have pricing set. The activity you’ve created won’t be visible in the webshop at this stage but will appear once a price is assigned. You can learn more about activity pricing in its dedicated course.
Booking request
When this toggle is enabled, your customer can only make a booking request through the webshop - completely bypassing the payment step via Paytrail or Stripe.
You will receive the customer's booking in your Moder system as a booking request, which you can choose to accept or decline. This topic is covered in more detail in the courses on managing and handling bookings.
Connected products
At this point, you can link an existing activity to the activity booking you’re currently creating.
The difference compared to the Connected products to section below is that in the Connected products section here, you can connect two activities, allowing them to be booked together in the same purchase flow. In contrast, the section below is for linking accommodation products.
Products connected to
At this stage, you can link an accommodation product to the activity product of your choice. This way, you can sell hour-based activity products alongside accommodations, and they will appear in the same purchase flow in your webshop.
First, create your activity in Moder. Then, go to your accommodation product, and link the desired activity to the accommodation booking as shown in the image below. Easy and efficient, right?
Internal notes
Here you can add internal notes. These are not visible to your customers.
Check-in instructions
Here, you can provide check-in instructions - for example, when the reception closes, where to pick up sauna keys, where to park the car, and other important details regarding the customer's arrival.
This information will be visible in the customer's GuestApp view. You'll learn more about this feature in another course.
VAT
Select the applicable tax rate for this product. Later, you can add services with different tax rates to the price - more on that later in this course.
Creating activity products - private bookings
Private bookings are customized activities or services reserved exclusively for one booking at a time, such as a private sauna session, a party venue, or other spaces reserved for private use.
Private bookings differ from unit bookings, where multiple customers can reserve the same product simultaneously, such as spots for a general sauna session.
In this section, we’ll focus on private bookings and how to create and manage private activity products in Moder’s Products section.
Private bookings are ideal for situations where you want to offer customers the ability to reserve an entire product for their exclusive use, without sharing it with others. This is particularly beneficial for businesses offering spaces or services where privacy and exclusivity are key selling points.
We are in the process of creating a new activity product and have almost reached the bottom of the Basic information page. The next option you’ll encounter pertains to the maximum number of people allowed for the booking.
Maximum number of people to accommodate
Although this refers to the number of guests, it actually means the maximum number of people you can accommodate for the activity.
In our example of creating a private sauna session for six people, we’ll set the limit to 6 people.
Note! The "Maximum number of guests" section includes all individuals participating in the activity, including children. Make sure to fill in the details accurately!
Default duration (min)
Every activity requires a default duration, specified in minutes. In our example, the sauna session lasts 60 minutes. Set your desired duration for the activity accordingly.
Unit based
Since we are creating a private booking, leave this checkbox unchecked. In the next example, where we create a unit-based booking (allowing multiple spots for a single activity), we’ll enable it. More on that in the next section of the course! :)
Note: A quick reminder - your newly created activity product will only appear in your webshop after it has been priced. At this stage, we’re just building the foundation for your private activity. After completing this course, head over to the course on activity pricing.
Creating activity products - unit based bookings
Unit-based bookings are products that can be sold to multiple customers simultaneously. Examples of unit bookings include general sauna sessions, group activities, or other services where a specific number of spots or units are sold for the same time slot.
Unlike private bookings, unit bookings allow you to sell the same activity or space to multiple customers at the same time, maximizing the product's utilization and boosting sales efficiency.
This guide focuses on creating and managing unit-based products in Moder’s Products section.
Unit bookings are particularly useful when you want to offer services where customers can reserve a spot without having to book the entire product for themselves. This is an ideal solution for group events, open sauna sessions, or similar situations where the same space or service is shared among multiple customers.
We’re now creating a new activity product and have reached the Basic Information page, nearly at the bottom - right where we were earlier when learning how to build a private activity booking. Building a unit-based activity product differs from the previous process with just one additional button press, which you’ll find at the bottom of the page. Let’s take a closer look!
The next option you'll see is about the maximum number of people allowed for the booking.
Maximum number of people to accommodate
Let's add these in the next section, hold on a moment!
Default duration (min)
Every activity requires a default duration, specified in minutes. In our example, the duration of a general sauna session is set to 60 minutes. Set the desired duration for your activity accordingly.
Unit based
And here comes the key difference from the private activity we discussed earlier - since we are now creating a unit-based product, you’ll need to check this box. This tells Moder that you’re creating a unit-based activity, where bookings are made for individual spots.
Creating activity products - adding units to the unit based activity bookings
Since this is a unit-based activity booking, we’ll need to add units, meaning the reservable spots. For now, let’s stay on the first page of the product’s basic information, and we’ll move on to setting up the units shortly.
Maximum number of people to accommodate
Although this refers to the number of guests, it actually means the maximum number of people you can accommodate in the unit-based activity.
In our example, we’re creating a 1-hour general sauna session, where each person attending is priced individually. Therefore, we set the number of people to one.
Remember to click the Save and continue button! Let's then have a look how to add units, or so called reservable spots.
Moder Tip! You can also set the number to more than one, which might be necessary for activities like snowmobile bookings - since a snowmobile often accommodates two people. We'll break down this example in more detail later in this section. ?
Set the desired number of spots
Now, let’s proceed to add units for the unit-based activity. Go back to the Products tab and click on the Units section.
Click the Edit button in the top left corner to start adding the desired number of units. Don’t forget to name the units as well!
Example - Horse back riding session for 6 people
In the Products tab under the Basic information section, set the number of people to 1, as shown in our example above. This ensures that each spot can be reserved individually.
Next, add 6 spots in the Units tab to match the number of people the activity can accommodate.
Clear as day, right? In our example, we just added ten reservable spots to our general sauna session, each lasting 60 minutes and bookable individually through the webshop.
We’ll also price each spot separately in Moder’s Pricing section. After completing this course, make sure to check out the Activity product pricing course so you can start selling your activities.
Moder Tip! After setting up pricing for your activity products, it’s a good idea to test them in your webshop yourself. This ensures that the product functions as intended and provides the desired customer experience.
Example - 8 snowmobiles, each accommodating 1-2 people at a time
In the Products tab under Basic information, set the maximum number of people to 2. This way, each spot (snowmobile) can be reserved individually, accommodating up to two people per reservation.
Next, add 8 spots in the Units tab to match the number of snowmobiles available for booking.
In our example, we’ve now added 8 spots to the Snowmobile Safari, each accommodating 1-2 people at a time, reflecting the physical capacity of the snowmobiles. The individuals will be priced separately in the Pricing section of your Moder system.
Creating an activity product - over-night activity bookings
The type list also includes options like Sauna, Party venue, and Conference room, which are meant for overnight bookings. If needed, you can create these products just like accommodation products and manage them similarly.
When creating such a product, select Sauna, Party venue, or Conference room as the product type and proceed to complete the setup as you would for an accommodation product.
Booking these spaces works exactly the same way as booking an overnight accommodation product. So, feel free to check out the Building and editing accommodation products course for more details!
Location
Address and Google Maps
On this tab, you can enter the physical address of your activity product. If you’ve added filters for regions in the settings, you can link the product to a specific region using the "Place" field.
You can also add the location to Google Maps, allowing travelers to easily view the activity product’s location in your webshop. If you save a Google Maps address, don’t forget to click the "Add" button that appears next to it.
Driving directions
In the driving directions section, you can provide important details, such as driving directions or other key arrival information. Use this space to share anything travelers need to know about reaching the activity location.
These details will appear on the traveler’s booking confirmation and in the GuestApp. Click the "Add Language" button in the top right corner to write instructions in multiple languages.
Amenities
From this tab, you can check off the amenities available at your activity product - if you wish to set any. Only the amenities you select will appear in the webshop.
Images and descriptions
Completing this tab is one of the most important steps in building your Moder setup. Here, you can add images and captions to your activity product, making it more visually appealing and informative for your customers.
Images
You can either upload images or drag-and-drop them directly into Moder. Please note that the images must be in .jpg format. You can easily rearrange the images by dragging them.
The images will be displayed in Moder in the order you set here, so the first image is the most important one for sales.
Moder tip! The better the images, the more appealing the listing, and the more appealing the listing, the more money you’ll make. So, invest in the images for your webshop!
What kind of images work best for Moder, and what should you consider regarding image size and other specifications? Here are our tips for choosing images and some guidelines for image dimensions:
- Maximum image size: 10 MB per image.
- Number of images: There is no limit to how many images you can add to Moder, but we recommend keeping it to 20-25 images per listing for optimal results.
- Display aspect ratio: Images will appear in a 3:2 aspect ratio in the booking search.
- Aspect ratio flexibility: While the aspect ratio doesn't need to be exactly 3:2, the images will be cropped automatically. Horizontal images are recommended to avoid losing important details.
- Vertical images may lose information at the top and bottom during cropping.
- Low aspect ratio images (e.g., 16:9) may have their sides cropped.
- Recommended image width: At least 1920px wide (e.g., 1920x1280 for 3:2 aspect ratio).
- Larger images: Images larger than this are fine, as they will be automatically resized for display.
Text
Here, you can also provide a short and a long description for your product. The short description is meant to be concise, just a couple of sentences, and it will appear on the webshop's front page.
The long description, on the other hand, will be available for travelers to read when they explore the product in more detail on the webshop.
You can also format your text using the available formatting tools.
For both the short and long descriptions, you can also add translations using the "Add Language" button.
Nearby services
Here, you can specify the distance from your product to key services if you wish.
This information is not yet visible to travelers in the webshop, but this feature will be activated in the future. For now, the information is for internal use only on this tab, No. 5.

Extra services for activities
Let's take a look, how to add activities for extra services.
Extra service included in the accommodation price
It might sound funny when talking about activities, but this refers to an extra service you want to bundle into the activity's price.
To add a new extra service, click the "Create new" button in the top-right corner.
Moder includes predefined categories for extra services, but if your service doesn’t fit any of them, you can choose the "Other" category. This category is visible only to you and will not appear to your customers.
You can name the extra service however you like and add translations for different languages. You can also provide a more detailed description of the extra service if you wish.
Tick the box for "Moder Booking Engine" to make the extra service available for travelers to purchase in your webshop.
You can also add an image for your extra services. The image will be visible to travelers in your webshop - whether it’s an included extra service or one available for purchase. Adding images instantly makes your webshop more appealing and boosts the attractiveness of your extra services = more money in your pocket. ?
More details about pricing extra services in the next section.
When you select that an extra service is included in the price of the accommodation (in this case, the activity), you can also choose whether Moder automatically calculates the quantity of the extra service based on the number of guests (e.g., linens) or the number of booked nights (e.g., parking). You can even select both options, meaning the extra service will be calculated based on both the number of nights and guests.
For hourly-based activities, it’s less common to book by nights, but if you’ve created activity products (e.g., Party venue, Conference room, Sauna) that are booked per night, you can adjust this accordingly.
In the example below, each guest will now have a towel included in the booking price for the activity (Sauna, Traditional Finnish sauna)
And that’s it! You can now check how the extra service you set up appears in your webshop if you’d like.
Optional paid extra service
Here, the process is almost identical to the one above, except for the pricing method. In this case, you’ll set an additional cost, choose a maximum quantity for the product, and select the products to which you want the extra service to be added in your webshop.
Pricing extra services
Pricing is straightforward, as we explained in the previous section. You can choose whether the extra service is included in the price of your product or if you want to sell it for an additional cost. You can also set the price to zero for marketing purposes. Here are some examples below!
Good to know about pricing
If the extra service is included in the price of the accommodation (in this case, the activity), you don’t necessarily need to assign a price to it. The exception is for extra services with a different VAT rate, in which case a price must be set.
Example 1: Extra service included in the price
In this example, the extra service, breakfast, is included in the price of the meeting package. The portion of the meeting room price (100€) allocated to breakfast is 12€ , leaving 88€ as the cost of the meeting room itself.
Example 2: Extra service not included in the price
In this example, the extra service, non-alcoholic beer, is not included in the price of the activity but is offered as an optional extra in the webshop alongside the sauna booking (the activity).
The extra service has a maximum quantity of 10, meaning the traveler can purchase up to ten units of this extra service in the webshop.
NOTE! If the minimum quantity is set to 1, the webshop would require the traveler to select this extra service as a mandatory paid add-on for the activity. Please note that this is not allowed. Mandatory extra services are only permitted if the price of the service is set to 0€.
Example 3: Extra service displayed but not bookable in the webshop
In this example, a hot tub is advertised to travelers alongside the sauna booking, but it is not intended to be booked through the webshop. The minimum and maximum quantities are set to zero.
Detailed booking instructions for the hot tub are provided in the description field of the extra service.
Reordering extra services in the webshop
You can rearrange the order of extra services in the webshop to your preference by clicking the gear icon at the top right.
You can drag and drop services and products into your desired order or reset them to the default arrangement. There’s no need to press a save button - the order is updated in your webshop immediately.
What does booking an activity look like in Moder's webshop?
Booking an activity has been made as easy as possible for customers - book your accommodation, add your desired activity to the same cart, and pay. It's that simple!
In this section, we’ll quickly show you what an activity booking looks like from the customer’s perspective, based on the examples covered in this course. However, you can always test the activity booking yourself in your webshop if you’d like.
We highly recommend testing every time you create a new activity product.
NOTE! Booking an activity through the webshop requires pricing to be set for the product. Please review the pricing courses and then check that your activity booking appears correctly in your webshop.
Examples in the webshop
Below is an example of the sauna created during this course, which is available for private use. The sauna accommodates up to 10 people at a time. It can be easily added to the cart, whether as part of an accommodation booking or as a standalone reservation.
And here’s an example of booking spots for the horse back riding session we created earlier. Unlike the private booking above, this option allows up to 10 spots to be reserved.
Below is an example of how the craft beer is displayed as extra service in the webshop. Towels are included by default.
How to link an activity booking to accommodation
Linking an activity booking to an accommodation booking is super easy. Here are the steps to do it:
- Create the desired accommodation and activity products in Moder.
- Set pricing for both the accommodation and activity products.
- Go to your accommodation product in Moder and add the desired activity bookings under the "Connected products" section, then click Save.
Here are instructions:
Go to the desired accommodation product and click the "Edit" button on the right. The activity is linked to the accommodation product in Section 1: Basic Information.
Go to the "Connected products" section and select the activities you want to offer alongside the accommodation. Don’t forget to click the Save button at the bottom!
Now, in our example, the webshop booking for the Standard room appears as follows for activity sales:
Moder tip! Invest in the images and descriptions of your activities - the more engaging the visuals and text, the more sales you’ll generate.
