What is a virtual package in Moder?
A virtual package in Moder is a sellable accommodation or activity package that combines lodging, activities, and additional services into attractive bundles. For example, a virtual package could be a Christmas accommodation package, a yoga retreat, or an overnight adventure. These packages pull availability from your room types and group multiple experiences under a single booking.
With virtual packages, you can move beyond selling just rooms to offering comprehensive experiences, enhancing customer satisfaction and boosting revenue.
Overview of virtual packages
A virtual package is a bundle that consists of accommodation or activity options and their components, such as additional services. For instance, a yoga retreat package might include lodging, a retreat program, and other activities.
Virtual packages enable you to sell an entire experience through a single booking, with availability drawn from underlying room types or activities in the background.
Virtual packages can also be used for seasonal or event-specific bookings, such as Midsummer, Christmas, or Easter accommodation packages. A virtual package seamlessly combines lodging or activity product and extra services into an easy-to-book offering available through your webshop.
Benefits and usage of virtual packages
Virtual packages provide an opportunity to maximize sales and create unique experiences. With per-person pricing, you can achieve more precise segmentation and targeted marketing. Compared to selling accommodation alone, virtual packages can boost your revenue by 15–100%.
Building a virtual package
The foundation of a virtual package
Creating a virtual package is as straightforward as setting up an accommodation or activity product. In Moder, a virtual package simply refers to an accommodation package that pulls availability from the appropriate room type.
Each virtual package has its own price, additional services, description, and images, tailored to provide a unique and appealing offering.
Difference from a standard accommodation product
The only difference between a virtual package and a standard accommodation or activity product is that, when creating a virtual package, you check the "virtual room" box and select the products from which availability will be sourced. After that, you add the included additional services that make the package an attractive option for the customer.
In this course, we assume the necessary accommodation and/or activity products are already created in Moder, so we’ll focus solely on the packaging process.
If you need a refresher on building accommodation and activity products, you can revisit the following courses:
- "2. Building and editing an accommodation destination"
- "2.1 Pricing and channel management for accommodation destinations"
- "3. Building and editing an activity destination"
Building a virtual package in Moder
The instructions below apply to both accommodation and activity packages.
Start by creating a new product in your Moder under the desired property.
Creating a virtual room type
Activate the "Virtual room" setting and select the room types from which availability will be fetched in the "Availability from" menu (e.g., Standard, Deluxe, Suite). The customer will not see the exact room type; the reservation will be determined based on available rooms.
Please note that the virtual package you are about to create must have the same price point for all the room categories that you select under "Availability from" column. If you have the same virtual package available for different price categories, each price category must be created as its own virtual package.
Filling in basic information: Fill in the other basic details of the item as usual, paying special attention to the description and images. These details help make the package appealing.
Filling in basic information
Complete the rest of the virtual room's basic information as usual, paying particular attention to the description texts and images. These details help make the package appealing.
Adding products to the virtual package
The components of the package, such as additional services, are created as add-ons in Moder and linked to the virtual package:
Creating extra services:
- Create the necessary extra services and activate the "Published in Moder webshop" setting.
- Assign an internal price to the extra service if its portion of the total package price needs to be itemized on receipts and reports, for example, due to differing VAT rates. In this case, set the pricing method for the add-on to "Included in room price." Such an add-on could be, for instance, breakfast or an alcoholic beverage with a different VAT rate than accommodation.
Linking extra services to the package:
- Assign the extra services to the virtual package you created, such as a Romantic Getaway, and remember to save the settings.
- You can add multiple services to the package, such as dinners, sauna bookings, or other activities.
Pricing strategies for virtual packages and their benefits
Pricing virtual packages is a powerful way to enhance business profitability and improve the customer experience. A well-designed pricing strategy attracts customers, optimizes sales, and provides significant added value for all parties. By effectively pricing virtual packages, you can create compelling offers that highlight the best aspects of your experiences!
Benefits of virtual package pricing
1. Maximizing revenue
Dynamic pricing and targeted campaigns help optimize revenue at different times, allowing prices to be adjusted according to demand.
2. Enhanced customer experience
Virtual packages offer customers clear and easy-to-understand pricing that includes everything in a single booking. This reduces the need for extra planning and enhances the booking experience.
3. Competitive advantage in the market
Versatile pricing enables you to offer competitive packages that stand out. Pricing can emphasize the added value of the package, such as included services unavailable elsewhere.
4. Predictable sales
Special pricing allows for precise adjustments of availability during specific periods, improving resource management and planning, such as for catering or activities.
5. Upselling opportunities
By pricing additional services as part of the virtual package, customers can easily book extra services like massages or activities, increasing upselling potential.
Pricing strategies
1. Dynamic seasonal pricing
Leverage seasonal variations and peak times in virtual package pricing. Set higher prices for high-demand periods, such as holidays or vacation seasons, and offer discounted rates for quieter periods. This maximizes revenue during peak times and balances demand during off-peak periods.
2. Value-based pricing
Price your packages based on the value you offer. If the package includes exclusive services like private activities or luxury accommodation, you can justify higher prices. Highlight the added value customers receive, such as "includes private sauna access and a gourmet dinner," to make the package stand out.
3. Promotional pricing and special offers
Take advantage of promotions and special offers, such as "Book three nights, pay for two" or "Free activity with accommodation." Campaigns encourage quick purchase decisions and motivate customers to book specific dates or services.
4. Pricing for additional guests
Set an extra fee for additional guests, providing flexibility for larger groups and families. This pricing approach makes the package appealing to a broader audience and increases sales by allowing larger groups to easily add participants.
5. Limited availability and VIP pricing
Create exclusivity by pricing the virtual package as a VIP product for a limited number of customers. Limited availability and premium pricing can attract customers seeking unique and personalized experiences and willing to pay more for special treatment.
Creating a price for a virtual package
The pricing of virtual packages works the same way as pricing other products in Moder, but it includes strategic benefits that can enhance the customer experience and significantly increase revenue.
Pricing virtual packages allows you to create attractive offers that combine accommodation and activities into one bundle, making it easier for customers to decide and encouraging them to book.
Setting the base price
Create a Base Price for the package as you normally would, and define the rates, additional person fees, and validity period.
Pricing for accommodation and activity products is covered in separate Moder courses, so check those out first if you're feeling uncertain.
Please note that at this stage, you are pricing the entire package—not just the accommodation or activities individually. You are setting the price for the entire accommodation package, including all products and services included in the package.

Selling products across multiple properties with virtual packages
We often get questions about how to list the same product for sale across two different properties/webshops, and this can be easily achieved with a virtual property.
Follow the example provided in this course to create a virtual version of one of your existing properties for your second location. Below is an example image demonstrating how to list the same property in two different webshops:
Exceptions and notes about virtual packages
What you should know
Virtual packages are an excellent tool for creating travel bundles. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind:
Reports
Virtual packages appear in reports based on the products they were created for—that is, the product (room category or activity product) from which the package pulls availability.Booking confirmation
In the booking confirmation, the customer will see the base product set for the virtual package, such as the room category that was available, as well as the name of their virtual package.Scheduled messages
Scheduled messages are also tied to the base product you have set—the one on which the virtual package is based and from which availability is pulled.External sales channels
Virtual packages cannot be listed in external sales channels.
Benefits of virtual packages
Virtual packages offer a great way to maximize sales and create unique experiences. With package pricing, you can set rates per person, enabling precise segmentation and targeted marketing. Virtual packages can increase your revenue by 15–100% compared to selling accommodation alone.
Examples of virtual packages
- Accommodation offers: Discount campaigns, trade fair offers
- Seasonal accommodation packages: Midsummer, Christmas, Easter, New Year
- Events: Yoga retreats, sports vacations, excursions
- Meeting packages: Overnight meetings, remote work packages
- Wellness: Massage and wellness packages
Virtual packages not only boost sales but also improve operational efficiency. When most customers book predefined packages, you can plan activities and operations in advance, ensuring smoother customer service and enhancing the guest experience.
